Roulette’s history is rich with speculation and mystery. The most popular theory is that it was invented as far back as 1655 by a French researcher of the time called Blaise Pascal. To begin with it was a random number generator and then it began to be successfully by the government to extract money from people, continuing to this day.
Roulette is based on the principle of complete randomness. That much you can see because all of it goes on right in front of you. The dealer (also known as croupier) throws a small wooden ball (hence the name, which means “A small ball” in French) onto a rotating online roulette wheel, which is divided into sections. Players bet their money on a particular section, or pocket, beforehand.
This is a game of chance, with no possible way of the casino influencing the outcome. At this table you can be sure that no-one has rigged the game. Unless you discount the zero (In European casinos) and double zero (in the American version of the game), which tip the odds in favor of the casino. The casino gets its house edge advantage through these two pockets, which are described in one of the earliest books on the subject, by Jaques Lablee, La Roulette, ou le Jour, as “Two betting spaces containing the bank’s two numbers, zero and double zero…exactly two slots reserved for the bank, whence it derives its sole mathematical advantage.” The house edge is 2.70% and 5.40% in the European and American versions respectively.
When you set off on this exciting adventure, a word of warning: be sure to budget responsibly and have a good winning roulette strategy. It may seem like it is the most straightforward system ever invented. And it is. Its creator did intend it as a random number generator after all.
But this small addition of “bank’s pockets” means that the same rule applies, just like it would with every other game. And I know you’re sick of hearing this, but still, Rule No 1 when it comes to playing online Roulette for real money:
The house always wins!
How Online Roulette Works
The system itself is not complicated. Make your bet, wait for the dealer to start and announce that there are no more bets, panic and think you should have bet completely differently, regret every decision you ever made in your life and wait until it’s over. If you’re anything like me, anyway.
Good news, however, is that there are right and wrong ways of making bets.
The safest way of betting is putting a bet on red or black, which will, if you win, double your investment. The more risk you take, the more potential payoff. In the middle are things like Corner Bets, which is a bet on 4 numbers, which pays off 8 to 1. That’s a more or less 10% chance of winning, because it’s 4 out of 37.
If you’re really into Integrals (and who isn’t, right?), there are relatively complex systems that will advise you to combine bets in a unique way to get the best results.
For example, there is a 5 Quad roulette strategy to win that includes 5 corner bets and one straight up bet (a bet on a single number with a payout potential of 35 to 1). That gives you massive coverage of the board and increases your chances, maximizing your potential. However, online Roulette Basic Strategy and Advanced Strategies are a subject of another article, so I will briefly outline the things to keep in mind, not too make things overly complicated all at once.
Minimum risk bet – Red or Black, Odd or Even, and so on. Payoff 2 to 1. For example, if you bet $100 dollars or the ball landing on red and it does, you get $200 back.
Maximum risk bet, arguably, is a straight-up bet (“en plein” in French). There’s an extremely small likelihood of it happening. Basically, it’s next to impossible to get it. But the payoff is 35 to 1. And then there are all the variations in-between.
How Are Online Roulette Numbers Generated
There is absolutely no way to predict how the numbers will turn out in online Roulette or where the ball will land in a land-based casino.
That is not to say people haven’t tried. During the history of online roulette casinos, and land-based casinos, there have been many attempts to built equipment that will allow users to cheat. Roulette tables are equipped with colossal amounts of very expensive software which detects any kind of signal that influences the outcome the game. There are video cameras, trained personnel, and even math-based security that allows to detect patterns in players’ bets. For example, if you did figure out a system of winning every time, or a lion’s share of the time, you would be detected and dealt with very soon. Casinos take their money very seriously and that is why I would strongly recommend against trying to cheat in casinos. See Rule No. 1.
On the other hand, do make sure that you pick a safe casino with a good reputation that used a Random Number Generator for its online Roulette Tables. Checking that is virtually impossible, so all you have to go on is the feedback from users and independent online Roulette reviews like this one.
Online Roulette Practice Warning
Online roulette tricks to take with you and remember at all times:
- Remember that there is a reason veteran users recommend picking games where you have as much control over the game as possible and as little as possible is left to chance. Therefore at all times budget responsibly, and avoid betting all on one at all times.
- Gambling is as much about self-control as anything else. Set a spending limit and, although this is extremely hard, when you reach it, walk away. It is the best online roulette strategy for gamblers.
